PAT: Portable Appliance Testing
What is Portable Appliance Testing?
Portable Appliance Testing is a procedure that examines electrical appliances and equipment to ensure that they are safe for use. The Engineer will conduct a visual examination of the appliance, and a dedicated Portable Appliance Tester will be used to find any non-visual defects. The Engineer will perform both visual and non-visual examinations of appliances to conform to electrical safety standards.

Do I need a PAT Testing service?
There are a number of factors to why you would need a PAT Testing service. If you have had certain electrical items for a long time and you are unsure if they are safe to use you should arrange a test! If it's an appliance that you use all the time it's still worth it as you cannot always visually see faults in electrical equipment. The frequency of portable appliance testing is determine on several factors.

Grades of PAT Testing?
Electrical appliances are normally categorised into 3 Class:
1. Class 1 - Most dangerous (This type of equipment only has basic insulation and relies on earth for protection. This needs a full PAT Test)
2. Class 2 - Middle ground (This type of electrical equipment has extra insulation and doesn't rely on earth for protection. Needs at-least a PAT Insulation Test)
3. Class 3 - Least dangerous (This is normally a low voltage item and is the safest of all 3 of the grades. I would recommend a PAT Test to be done anyway as their charging leads may still need to be checked but not necessary.
